MWC 2015: CommScope to demo DAS for telecom markets in Europe

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2015) in Barcelona, CommScope will demo ION-U, its new distributed antenna system (DAS) for telecom markets in Europe.

CommScope said ION-U supports five frequency bands — 800, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz bands — common to Europe.

Telecom operators can utilize the DAS to extend wireless coverage and capacity in many outdoor settings (oDAS) as well as indoor applications (iDAS) to meet customer demands for high-end data applications.

CommScope has supplied DAS solutions for the 2006 World Cup stadiums in Germany, the Rome Metro system, the Gotthard base tunnel in Switzerland, etc in Europe.

“We are ready to deliver our most advanced DAS offering, the ION-U, and all its inherent benefits to customers here, as well,” said Matt Melester, senior vice president and general manager, Distributed Coverage and Capacity Solutions, CommScope.

ION-U features software that guides the installation, optimization and commissioning of the system, converting a time and resource intensive job into an automated process. Instead of requiring skilled RF technicians, ION-U installation can utilize a less specialized workforce while decreasing roll out times and the total cost of ownership.

The main benefit is that ION-U supports multiple operators, multiple frequency bands and multiple generations of air interface technologies in one system, CommScope said.

To increase data capacity, the ION-U also supports tri-band MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) configurations over a single fiber to enhance the capacity and traffic load the ION-U can handle while continuing to offer a low visual impact.
