2024 LATAM Fiber Broadband Leaders Summit, hosted by Huawei and supported by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), was held in Brazil, drawing over 260 participants from industry organizations, carriers, and partners across Latin America.
Themed “Digital Fiber, Advancing Giga LATAM”, the summit focused on the future of fiber broadband in the region and introduced innovative strategies and solutions to accelerate gigabit fiber network development.
At the summit, Joey Zhou, President of Huawei Latin America ICT Marketing and Solution Sales Department, highlighted the increasing dominance of optical fiber as the leading broadband technology in Latin America. Citing a 2024 report by Omdia, Zhou noted that fiber now accounts for over 60% of home broadband connections in the region. The rapid growth of digital services such as home offices, live streaming, and e-commerce has driven users to upgrade from 100Mbit/s to 1Gbit/s, expanding the demand for high-speed, high-quality fiber networks.
Joey Zhou emphasized that Latin America’s digital economy is in a “golden development period,” presenting significant opportunities for value creation. He expressed Huawei’s commitment to working closely with governments, regulators, carriers, and partners to accelerate the region’s transition to gigabit optical broadband and build a “digital Latin America.”
Gary Lu, President of Huawei Carrier Network Marketing and Solution Sales Department, delivered a speech titled “ACT3 to Embrace the GIGA and AI eras”, in which he outlined three key strategies for the region’s fiber broadband development:
All-optical transition – promoting the shift from traditional cable to fiber networks.
Gigabit transition – increasing both speed and network quality to meet the demands of digital and AI-driven services.
Scenario transition – providing diversified, scenario-based services to unlock new business opportunities.
Lu stressed that these three transitions would enhance Latin America’s fiber broadband industry, increasing user base and revenue while enriching the digital lives of its citizens. He declared that the region’s fiber construction is already “in the fast lane,” with the gigabit fiber broadband era now underway.
Additionally, Daniel Zhang, Vice President of Huawei Latin America ICT Marketing and Solution Sales Department, introduced three groundbreaking digital fiber solutions:
Digital Quick ODN 4 cores solutions for cost-effective fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) construction.
Service-level slicing-based FTTH gigabit solutions to ensure differentiated service experiences.
Symmetrical 2.5 Gbit/s Super GPON solutions to support small and medium-sized enterprises.
Zhang reiterated Huawei’s commitment to “In Latin America, For Latin America”, aiming to tailor innovations to local market needs and drive the development of the region’s digital economy. Huawei’s goal is to collaborate with industry partners to build a gigabit-powered Latin America, accelerating the region’s transition to a digital and AI-driven future.
