Infinera, Telefonica deploy optical networking platform for UK railway

Infinera and Telefonica UK deployed Infinera DTN-X packet optical transport networking platform across Network Rail’s railway infrastructure in the U.K.

Network Rail Telecom (NRT)’s 16,000 km of fiber optic cable reaches the rail network in England, Wales and Scotland, delivering telecommunications systems, managed services, and solutions to Great Britain’s railway.

NRT’s deployment of the DTN-X platform, featuring 500 gigabit per second (Gb/s) channel solution, is designed to support future terabit super-channels without requiring new chassis, said Infinera.

NRT has deployed Infinera’s Instant Bandwidth technology enabling NRT to deploy capacity with the click of a mouse, to meet their customer service demands for better services.

The DTN-X is designed to scale in the future to support up to 12 Tb/s of integrated OTN switching as well as Fast Shared Mesh Protection to provide rapid service protection even in the face of multiple fiber cuts.

“The Infinera Intelligent Transport Network provides a reliable solution through its use of photonic integrated circuits, and the software driven management system enables remote diagnostics and turn up of bandwidth, ideal for this type of network,” said Craig Ellis, head of Technology & Engineering at NRT.
