Huawei supports open SDN industry ecosystem

Telecom network vendor Huawei has joined hands with the Open Network Operating System (ONOS) and Open Networking Foundation (ONF) to build an open software-defined networking (SDN) industry ecosystem.

The initiative will assist telecom operators to accelerate SDN commercialization and develop their business in the future.

ONOS, the first open source SDN control platform, is supported by several top telecom service providers and telecom network vendors. It focuses on telecom operators’ networks and service needs and considers operators’ demands including high performance, reliability, security, and scalability.

“SDN openness and innovation will be a huge motivator behind industry development, requiring the joint efforts of numerous stakeholders,” said Zha Jun, president, Fixed Network Product Line, Huawei and ONOS Board Member.

Huawei said its SDN solutions will support the ONOS platform. By associating with ONOS, ONF, and Open Platform for NFV, Huawei will focus on creating a cohesive, open, and programmable SDN network architecture to meet the needs of operators.

Alam Tamboli, senior analyst at Dell’Oro Group, said in February: “In 2014 service provider routers had a record year in North America, which accounted for almost 40 percent of the worldwide market.  As operators in the region scale back Capex in the coming year, either due to completing their mobile backhaul networks, investing in NFV or SDN technologies, or in other cost-cutting initiatives, we may see a regional mix shift in 2015.”

To date, Huawei has carried out over 40 joint innovation projects with leading global operators, and is the industry leader for SDN commercialization.
