Huawei retains lead in mobile network market in 2018

IHS Markit analyst Stephane Teral says Huawei has retained its leading position in the global mobile network infrastructure market in 2018.
Mobile network infrastructure spending in 2018Huawei has 31 percent share in the global mobile network infrastructure market, which includes 2G, 3G and 4G hardware macrocell networks.

The performance of Huawei assumes importance because the China-based telecom network maker is facing unprecedented pressure in several European and US markets in the wake of the security related allegations.

Ericsson, Sweden-based telecom gear maker, has 27 percent share in the in the global mobile network infrastructure market.

Finland-based Nokia has 22 percent share in the global mobile network infrastructure market. Nokia recently said it signed 30 5G commercial deals.

Samsung and ZTE are the other leading vendors in the global mobile network infrastructure market. The IHS report disclosed that the market share of ZTE reached 11 percent in 2018. The share of Samsung in the mobile network infrastructure market in 2018 was 5 percent last year.

The report said the global 4G LTE infrastructure revenue reached $22.9 billion in 2018 – fuelled by China, Europe, among other nations.

China’s 4G LTE capital expenditures (capex) totaled $17.3 billion in 2018, which is 8.5 percent above the initial plan. China Mobile was responsible for much of the increase in plan, spending $1.5 billion more than its initial plan released in March 2018.

The IHS report did not mention about the 4G Capex or mobile network Capex in India, which is home for telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio.

The report noted that there was solid sustained infrastructure spending in Europe, Middle East, Africa and various countries in Asia.
