Ciena overtakes ADVA as the top Ethernet access device vendor in 2011

Telecom Lead India: Ciena, ADVA and Overture are the top
3 Ethernet access device vendor based on revenue market share in 2011.

Ciena has overtaken ADVA as the leader in Ethernet access
device revenue market share in 2011. Ciena gained market share due to its
mobile backhaul contracts, mainly in North America.

Actelis is leading the EFM bonded copper EAD segment.

In 2011, the EAD market saw consolidation. Overture’s
merger with Hatteras and TELCO Systems’ acquisition of ANDA’s assets were
significant.

The Ethernet access device market grew 17 percent in 2011
over 2010.

The market is forecast to grow 81 percent between 2012
and 2016.

The Ethernet access device market is growing nicely as a
direct reflection of carrier Ethernet connections to businesses, backhaul from
buildings and DSLAMs, and as a growing broadband and mobile backhaul
application,” said Michael Howard, principal analyst for carrier networks and
co-founder of Infonetics Research.

Service provider rollout and customer uptake of Ethernet
connections and services are driving demand for Ethernet access devices market.

Fiber EADs make up 70 percent of all EAD purchases, while
copper EADs (Ethernet over TDM bonded circuit, or EoTDM EADs, and Ethernet
First Mile bonded copper, or EFM EADs), make up the remaining 30 percent.

Copper has an important role for Ethernet services. While
many operators are moving to fiber as they upgrade building sites and mobile
backhaul from TDM to Ethernet, copper solutions fit in many places where the
expense of fiber is not justified.
