China Unicom trials 5G energy saving technologies from ZTE

China Unicom has conducted a trial in the 5G wireless network in Dalian, China, piloting the latest 5G energy saving technologies.

ZTE said the trial by the Liaoning branch of China Unicom has verified three energy saving technologies suitable for the 5G wireless network: DTX shutdown, channel shutdown, and deep sleep. The trial has tested different combinations of energy saving technologies in various network scenarios.

China Unicom has achieved reduction of 10-20 percent in the power consumption with DTX shutdown technology, 15-25 percent cut with channel shutdown technology, and 60-80 percent reduction with deep sleep technology.

ZTE’s 5G base station with S111 configuration can save 10 to 12 KWh per day on average when the energy saving technologies combination is enabled, with network KPIs remaining stable.

ZTE, one of the leading telecom network suppliers, has introduced hardware, including 7nm high-integration chip, the new-generation GaN high-efficiency power amplifier, and V-tooth heat dissipation with bionic leaf vein design to address 5G challenges.

ZTE, which is one of the main 5G network suppliers to China Unicom, has also developed multi-dimensional base station energy saving software technologies, reducing power consumption of 5G base stations.
