Alcatel-Lucent and Oni Communications create high capacity data networks in Europe

Alcatel-Lucent and Oni Communications, a communications
operator in Portugal, announced the establishment of 100 Gigabit-per
second-connection over the fiber-optic network linking Lisbon, Portugal and
Badajoz, Spain, creating highest capacity data networks in Europe.

High-speed data networks are at the heart of the digital
economy, supporting services such as video streaming and multimedia content
distribution, social networking, cloud services, e-commerce and a wide array of
business services.

In order to meet the growing demand for these
high-bandwidth services, Oni Communications is increasing capacity on its
network, while maintaining transmission quality and keeping costs in check.

Alcatel-Lucent upgraded Oni Communications’
Lisbon-Badajoz link, which was supporting 10G channels, to 100G. This trial
demonstrated that Alcatel-Lucent’s single carrier 100G optical coherent
technology increases the traffic handling capacity of the fiber-optic link,
while simultaneously reducing operations and maintenance costs and lowering
power consumption.

Making the most of our existing fiber-optic networks is
extremely important for us today, as it allows us to address exploding traffic
growth. Taking advantage of Alcatel-Lucent’s leading technology and expertise
in 100G, we have been able to demonstrate our position as a key innovator in
the Portuguese telecom market,” said Ilídio Cardoso, Board Member at Oni
Communications.

Oni Communications is continually investing in new
capabilities to strengthen its position in the Iberia Region. Our longstanding
partnership positions us side-by-side with an operator that has carved a
remarkable path of progress over a decade, making important contributions to
the development of the telecommunications sector in the country. We are fully
committed to support the evolution of Oni’s network, enabling them to deliver
the most advanced, highest quality business services to their customers,” said
António Beato Teixeira, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s
business in Portugal.

Alcatel-Lucent supplied Oni Communications with its 1626
Light Manager enhanced with 100G next-generation coherent technology through
the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS). Designed to address the booming demand
for more bandwidth, Alcatel-Lucent’s single-carrier 100G coherent technology
offers unprecedented performance in existing 10G and 40G networks as well as
brand new networks.

The solution deployed is part of Alcatel-Lucent’s
Converged Backbone Transformation Solution, a key domain of the Alcatel-Lucent
High Leverage Network (HLN) architecture, which is designed to slash transport
costs and dramatically reduce operational complexity in core networks.
