Samsung Galaxy Mega smartphones on Android Jelly Bean out

Telecom Lead Asia: Samsung said its Galaxy Mega smartphone — on Android — will be launched in Europe and Russia in May.

The company on Thursday did not specify price of the new smartphone.

Also, America, where it’s a waging a patent war, is not in the initial list of targeted markets for launching these two new phones.

Samsung says the other global markets will be covered gradually.

The new smartphone will be sold as two different versions – one with a 6.3-inch touchscreen and another with a smaller 5.8-inch display.

The larger version has 1.7GHz dual core processor and Li-ion 3,200 mAh  battery, while the smaller version sports 1.4GHz dual core processor and Li-ion 2,600 mAh battery.

The 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega — a LTE-enabled phone — features 1.5GB of RAM.

Both phones run on Android version 4.2 (Jelly Bean).

The 5.8-inch Galaxy Mega — which does not support LTE, but HSPA — and 6.3-inch variant comes with 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and 1.9-megapixel shooter on the front for video calls.

The 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega will be available as either an 8GB or 16GB variant. There’s a microSD slot for up to 64GB of additional memory.

The device comes with the usual array of Samsung apps and exclusive software, such as Samsung Link, S Travel and S Translator.

“We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Business, Samsung Electronics. “We are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers’ varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning GALAXY series.”

Samsung is trying to position Mega as a device that combines the portability and convenience of a smartphone with the power, multitasking capabilities and extensive viewing experience of a tablet.

The newest addition to the Galaxy family balances an optimal viewing experience on a 6.3-inch HD screen, yet is ultra-thin and portable enough to put into a pocket or hold in one hand. The Galaxy Mega offers a mix of popular smartphone and tablet features such as an effortless user experience, a split screen, multitasking between video and other apps and more.
