Samsung Expands Vietnam Smartphone Leadership as Apple Gains Momentum in Premium 5G Market in Q1 2026

Vietnam’s smartphone market in Q1 2026 remained one of Southeast Asia’s most brand-driven and premium-focused mobile markets, with Samsung Electronics strengthening its leadership position while Apple continued challenging major Chinese smartphone vendors in higher-value segments.

Vietnam smartphone market Q1 2026 Omdia report

Vietnam continued emerging as a strategically important smartphone market because of rising digital consumption, accelerating 5G deployment, expanding middle-class spending, and growing demand for both premium flagship smartphones and affordable feature-rich devices.

According to Omdia, Southeast Asia smartphone shipments declined 9 percent year-on-year in Q1 2026 as smartphone vendors increasingly focused on profitability, inventory optimization, and pricing discipline instead of aggressive shipment-led expansion.

Vietnam also remained one of the region’s most critical smartphone manufacturing and supply-chain hubs, supporting stronger product availability across premium, mid-range, and affordable smartphone categories.

Samsung leads Vietnam smartphone market with 29 percent share

Samsung Electronics secured the leading position in Vietnam’s smartphone market with a 29 percent market share in Q1 2026, supported by strong brand recognition, broad retail penetration, and stable demand across flagship Galaxy smartphones and affordable Galaxy A-series devices.

Samsung continued benefiting from strong consumer familiarity with the Galaxy ecosystem, premium retail visibility, operator partnerships, and AI-focused smartphone marketing. The company also strengthened leadership through foldable smartphone expansion and broader ecosystem integration involving tablets, wearables, laptops, and smart home devices.

OPPO captured second position with a 21 percent market share despite softer quarterly momentum. OPPO maintained strong market visibility through extensive offline retail distribution, installment-based smartphone financing programs, and camera-focused mid-range smartphones targeting younger consumers.

Apple secured third position with a 20 percent market share, narrowly trailing OPPO while reinforcing Vietnam’s rapidly expanding premium smartphone segment. Apple continued benefiting from resilient iPhone demand among urban professionals, content creators, affluent consumers, and younger buyers seeking long-term ecosystem value.

Xiaomi accounted for an 18 percent market share while maintaining stable growth momentum through aggressively priced Redmi smartphones and feature-rich Poco gaming devices targeting value-focused buyers.

vivo rounded out the top five with a 4 percent market share, maintaining a smaller but stable market presence through affordable smartphones and camera-centric product positioning.

Vietnam’s smartphone market remained heavily concentrated, with Samsung, OPPO, Apple, and Xiaomi collectively controlling 88 percent of total smartphone shipments. A sharp competitive gap also existed between Xiaomi and vivo, highlighting the dominance of the top four vendors.

Smartphone vendors focus on AI ecosystem expansion and mid-range competition

Smartphone brands in Vietnam increasingly focused on balancing premium ecosystem growth with aggressive mid-range smartphone competition as consumers upgraded devices amid rising AI adoption and stronger digital lifestyle engagement.

Samsung strengthened its market leadership strategy through Galaxy AI integration, foldable smartphone promotion, premium after-sales support, and broader ecosystem connectivity.

OPPO continued emphasizing offline retail execution, AI-enhanced photography, social-media-oriented smartphone experiences, and installment-led affordability programs targeting younger urban consumers.

Apple maintained strong traction through ecosystem loyalty, premium camera performance, long-term software support, and strong resale value. Vietnam continued witnessing rising demand for premium iPhones despite broader economic pressure affecting mass-market consumers.

Xiaomi maintained growth momentum through aggressively priced Redmi and Poco smartphones featuring gaming optimization, high-refresh-rate displays, fast charging capabilities, and large battery capacity.

vivo continued targeting niche mid-range categories through youth-focused branding strategies and camera-oriented smartphones.

Premium smartphone demand rises alongside affordable 5G growth

Vietnam’s smartphone market in 2026 continued showing strong dual demand for premium flagship smartphones and affordable 5G devices.

Samsung Galaxy A16 5G smartphones retailed in Vietnam between VND 5 million and VND 7 million depending on storage configurations and promotional campaigns, while Galaxy A55 5G smartphones generally ranged from VND 9 million to VND 12 million.

Apple iPhone 16 smartphones were available starting around VND 23 million to VND 25 million, while premium Pro variants exceeded VND 30 million across official Apple partners and major retail chains.

Xiaomi Redmi Note smartphones generally retailed between VND 4 million and VND 8 million, while Poco gaming-focused devices increasingly targeted the VND 7 million to VND 12 million segment.

Affordable smartphones from OPPO and vivo remained highly competitive in the VND 4 million to VND 10 million category through aggressive promotions, financing programs, and bundled operator offers.

Consumers increasingly prioritized AI-powered photography, premium OLED displays, gaming optimization, long battery life, thermal management, and fast charging technology instead of purely processor-focused upgrades.

Gaming, creator economy and premium upgrades shape buying trends

Vietnamese consumers increasingly prioritized premium smartphone experiences, gaming performance, AI-powered photography, and long-term software support during purchasing decisions in Q1 2026.

TikTok content creation, mobile gaming, digital payments, online commerce, and video streaming continued driving smartphone replacement cycles among younger urban consumers.

Vietnam also witnessed stronger demand for premium iPhones and flagship Samsung devices compared with several neighboring Southeast Asian markets because of rising disposable income and expanding participation in the creator economy.

Installment financing programs, trade-in offers, cashback promotions, and bundled operator packages increasingly influenced purchasing decisions across premium and mid-range smartphone categories.

Consumers also increasingly focused on battery performance, camera quality, gaming stability, thermal efficiency, and long-term software optimization as smartphone replacement cycles lengthened.

Telecom operators expand 5G rollout and digital ecosystem services

Vietnam’s expanding mobile internet ecosystem and accelerating 5G rollout continued supporting smartphone upgrades during 2026.

Major telecom operators including Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone expanded 5G infrastructure and digital service ecosystems across major cities and industrial regions.

Operators increasingly competed through high-data mobile plans, gaming-focused internet packages, AI-enabled digital services, and video streaming bundles as mobile data consumption continued rising rapidly.

Vietnam’s rapidly growing digital economy, expanding e-commerce sector, and rising mobile banking adoption continued driving demand for higher-performance smartphones and affordable 5G connectivity.

Consumers raise concerns over overheating and software optimization

Consumer discussions across smartphone communities, forums, and online retail platforms increasingly highlighted concerns related to overheating during gaming, battery drain, software optimization, and rising smartphone prices.

Several Samsung Galaxy users discussed battery drain and thermal performance concerns after software updates, while some Xiaomi users highlighted software advertisements and occasional lag during extended gaming sessions.

OPPO and vivo users occasionally raised concerns regarding delayed software updates and long-term performance consistency in lower-priced smartphones.

Apple users continued expressing concerns regarding premium iPhone pricing, expensive accessories, and battery replacement costs despite strong satisfaction with software stability and ecosystem quality.

Consumers also increasingly discussed rising mobile data costs and shorter promotional pricing periods as telecom operators focused more heavily on profitability and ARPU optimization strategies.

Outlook: AI-powered ecosystem competition expected to intensify

Vietnam is expected to remain one of Southeast Asia’s most strategically important smartphone markets because of strong digital adoption, rising premium smartphone demand, expanding 5G infrastructure, and increasing AI ecosystem integration.

Smartphone vendors are increasingly expected to compete through AI-powered features, gaming optimization, creator-focused camera capabilities, premium ecosystem connectivity, and financing-led affordability instead of purely hardware-based differentiation.

Samsung and Apple are likely to continue benefiting from Vietnam’s expanding premium smartphone segment, while Chinese smartphone vendors are expected to intensify competition across affordable AI-ready 5G smartphones and gaming-focused devices throughout 2026.
