Micromax invests in music broadcast service Gaana

Indian smartphone maker Micromax has invested in Gaana, a music broadcast and streaming service in India owned by Times Internet.

As part of the deal, all Micromax smartphones will come with Gaana mobile music. New Micromax smartphone users will also receive free trials to Gaana+, allowing unlimited downloads and no advertising. After the trial, users can continue with Gaana+ or use Gaana to access over 10 million songs with ad supported streaming.

Gaana music broadcast service has over 20 million active users and over 700 percent annual growth in consumption. Micromax sells over 3.5 million mobile phones every month.

“India is a music loving country and youth today are hooked on music for at least 2-3 hours a day through their smartphones,” said Rahul Sharma, co-founder, Micromax Informatics.

Gaana offers access to over 10 million songs in more than 45 languages, as well as 45 radio stations, 10 such radios are titled Radio Mirchi. Gaana is also available on all major mobile platforms such as iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry and J2ME.
