Apple said it has generated revenue of $71.63 billion from the sale of iPhones during the December quarter of 2021.

The US-based smartphone giant does not reveal the number of iPhones sold in the market.

“This quarter’s record results were made possible by our most innovative lineup of products and services ever,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

The IDC report said Apple had an impressive holiday quarter despite a slight year-over-year decline in shipments. iPhone 13 SKUs were an impressive portion of volumes in the holiday quarter driving strong growth in overall iPhone average selling prices.

Apple had healthy annual growth of 15.9 percent in 2021 due to the superb 40 percent growth in China in 2021.

The Strategy Analytics report said Apple shipped 80 million iPhones and topped the global smartphone market with 22 percent share in Q4 2021. Demand was strong for the new iPhone 13 series in China and other markets, Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics, said.

Apple shipped 82.7 million iPhones during the quarter, according to Canalys report. Apple delivered another strong holiday quarter driven by its new iPhone lineup, taking its full year shipments to 230 million and year-on-year growth of 11 percent.

Apple shipped 21.5 million smartphones in China and regained top position in the fourth quarter, thanks to the release of the iPhone 13 series — for the first time since Q1 2015.

“Apple delivered an outstanding quarter, providing an adequate supply to the Chinese market amid its tight global supply. Apple’s China market share in Q4 2021 was its highest and accounted for a quarter of total market shipments, a record for Apple since it entered in 2009,” said Canalys Analyst Toby Zhu.

The absence of strong Android competitors in the high-end segment also contributed to Apple’s stella performance this quarter. Apple’s success will accelerate Android vendors’ investment in the high-end market, with highly differentiated features and experiences for domestic consumers.

“Apple’s record-breaking year in smartphones is no surprise,” Canalys Research Analyst Le Xuan Chiew said.

Canalys VP of Mobility Nicole Peng said: “The challenge for vendors is to provide enough differentiations in both hardware technology and experience in this mature product category to accelerate the mid-to-high-end user replacement cycle.”
