Millicom Announces $2.7 Billion Colombia Telecom Network Investment with 5,000 Capacity Upgrades
Millicom has announced plans to invest approximately COP 8.5 trillion ($2.7 billion) in Colombia over four years following the integration of Tigo and Movistar operations. The program includes more than 5,000 mobile-network capacity upgrades between 2026 and 2028 and over 1,100 additional coverage sites, increasing the combined network to approximately 11,500 sites. More than 4,000 sites are expected to support 5G. Millicom aims to extend 5G coverage across 80 percent of Colombia’s major cities. The investment also covers fiber infrastructure, transmission capacity, data centers and network automation. The operator expects the expansion to connect previously unserved rural communities and improve connectivity for millions of existing customers.

The New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion has signed its first federal Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment agreement with Kit Carson Electric Cooperative. The project includes a $26.99 million federal grant and more than $12 million in matching investment. It will construct 1,035 miles of fiber, including 931 aerial miles and 104 underground miles. The network targets 3,935 locations across Colfax, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe and Taos counties. These include 1,970 unserved and 1,965 underserved locations. Another 31 community institutions are among the intended beneficiaries. Environmental approvals, permits and other preparations remain necessary before construction. Project completion is expected in 2030.
