Wipro Technologies to assist American cable operators to expand their broadband services

Telecom Lead America: Wipro Technologies is set to assist American cable operators to expand their broadband services.

As claimed by Wipro Technologies, its prepaid broadband solution enables cable system operators to reduce cost and credit obstacles, and expand broadband services to unserved or underserved markets in the U.S.

Wipro Accelerate, an end-to-end service, will enable cable operators to deploy prepaid packages without spending on heavy capital and operational expenses for new billing or product-support platform development. It is expected that cable operators can ensure positive return on investment, even at low price points.

Wipro said Accelerate allows the cost-effective launch of prepaid packages that can increase market penetration and address regulatory issues, including the Federal Communications Commission’s “Connect to Compete” program.

Wipro Technologies is betting on Cloud. Using the cloud based hosted solution, operators can offer products that are specifically designed to meet the needs of prepaid subscribers, and also avoid cannibalizing existing broadband deployment.

“The new challenge for the cable industry is to drive penetration to the 30 percent of households that are yet to adopt broadband,” said Stephen Snyder, global head, Business Innovation for Wipro’s Global Media and Telecommunications Strategic Business Unit.

Consumer studies have indicated that a third of non-adopters would subscribe to broadband if the cost was $20 per month.

Wipro’s telecom business is not doing well. Wipro’s Global Media and Telecom vertical fetched 14.9 percent of total revenue in Q1 FY13, down 4.9 percent from 16.8 percent of total revenue in Q1 FY12. Region-wise, America fetched 51.6 percent of total revenue in Q1 FY13, down from 53 percent of total revenue in Q1 FY12. Europe totaled for 28.1 percent in Q1 FY13, down marginally from 28.6 percent in Q1 FY12.
