Maxis picks Altobridge to deploy over 300 3G mobile broadband sites

Telecom Lead Asia: Malaysian mobile operator Maxis has selected Altobridge to deploy over 300 new mobile broadband sites, offering 3G services to rural communities.

Maxis is focusing on mobile broadband. In third quarter of 2012, non-voice business of Maxis contributed 45.3 percent of mobile revenue. Internet & data services (non-SMS) contributed 63 percent of non-voice revenue in Q3, 2012.

On January 1, 2013, it launched first 4G Network in Malaysia. The fourth generation mobile broadband service is now available in selected parts of the Klang Valley including Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Damansara Utama, Desa Sri Hartamas, Bandar Puchong Jaya, Bandar Sunway and Cyberjaya. Customers will enjoy speeds of up to 75Mbps, with typical average speeds of 10 to 30Mbps on the Maxis 4G LTE network.

Since Maxis’ data initiatives are driving overall revenue growth of 7 percent on back of growth in mobile internet, it has a special focus on 3G.

Utilizing Altobridge’s Data-at-the-Edge (DatE) feature, its latest mobile data optimization feature, close to 200 sites already in service across some of the remotest parts of Malaysia.

Altobridge says DatE adds increased intelligence at the radio base station level on mobile networks to reduce the cost of data delivery between an operator’s core network and the radio base station.

Mike Fitzgerald, CEO of Altobridge said Optimizing and managing voice and data at the edge of the network delivers savings of over 40 percent in mobile broadband transmission costs.

Mark Dioguardi, joint chief operating officer, Maxis, says the bandwidth optimization features coupled with its VSAT offerings, makes rural deployment a positive proposition.
