This move follows Australia’s recent ban on social media access for children under 16, which includes fines for platforms like Meta and TikTok if they fail to comply, Reuters news report said.

Indonesia Communications Minister Meutya Hafid did not disclose Indonesia’s proposed minimum age but mentioned receiving support from President Prabowo Subianto.

Internet penetration in Indonesia reached 79.5 percent last year, with 48 percent of children under 12 having internet access. Many in this age group already use platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Among Gen Z users, aged 12 to 27, internet penetration was 87 percent.
