Deutsche Telekom today said it plans to provide broadband services with up to 250 megabits per second (Mbit/s) to six million households from August 1.
The number of households receiving the new high speed Internet connection will grow to 15 million by 2019, Deutsche Telekom said.
“We’re building a fast Internet for the masses, instead of reserving top speeds for the few,” Dirk Wossner, managing director of Telekom Deutschland, said.
Deutsche Telekom will activate the high-speed broadband lines in 900 municipalities in Germany.
Deutsche Telekom’s target was regional centers and rural areas in the first phase, while it will focus on large cities in the second phase, lasting until the end of the year. Customers are invited to go to www.telekom.de/schneller to determine whether they live in one of the areas chosen for the upgrade.
Deutsche Telekom said customers need to book the Magenta Zuhause XL rate plan, which offers download speeds of up to 250 Mbit/s and upload speeds of up to 40 Mbit/s, to obtain the new lines, or upgrade accordingly.
Deutsche Telekom has priced EUR 19.95 per month for new broadband customers in the first six months. Deutsche Telekom will increase the monthly price to EUR 54.95 after the special offer for six months. Customers also have the option of adding EntertainTV for an additional 9.95 euros per month, which includes an ultra HD receiver with 500 GB of storage capacity.
Customers, who do not have Deutsche Telekom’s Speedport W 925V and Speedport Smart 3 routers, can buy for EUR 4.95 per month under the leasing model. Customers can also use any third-party routers that are compatible with the new service.
Deutsche Telekom plans to offer access speeds of at least 50 Mbit/s to some 80 percent of all households in Germany by end of 2019. The majority will actually have bandwidth of at least 100 Mbit/s available.
