BT to increase price of broadband and voice services in UK

free-wi-fi-from-btBritish telecom giant BT has decided to increase the price of its broadband and phone services with effect from April 2017.

Price of basic broadband from BT will go up by £2 per month, while price of all BT Infinity fibre plan will increase by £2.50 per month.

There will be no change in rental of BT’s phone services fixed at £18.99 per month. Price per minute of call will increase by 1p for both mobile and landlines, while call setup-fees (the cost of each call irrespective of how long you speak) will gone by 2p to 21p per call.

The price of anytime call plans will go up by 49p to £8.99 per month, with evening and weekend call plans will be increased by 30p to £3.80 per month.

Call features such as call minder will go up by 25p, while the charge for BT Privacy and caller display remain the same.

As per the new pricing strategy, BT Sport will not be free for BT TV customers. The price of BT Sport will be £3.50 per month. BT said that there will be no change in mid and top-level BT TV packages.

BT broadband customers who wish to watch BT Sport on their Sky box will be forced to spend an additional £1.50 per month for the privilege.

Non-BT broadband customers who want to watch BT Sport on their Sky box will need to spend an additional £1 per month.

John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer, said: “Customers will get a better package and improved service from us this year in exchange for paying a little more.”

BT last made changes to its pricing of its telecom services in July 2016 when it increased the cost of most broadband packages by £2 per month.

BT Group plc has reported £6,007 million revenue (+35 percent) in second quarter to 30 September 2016 – mainly due to the acquisition of rival EE. BT Group generated £1,251 million revenue (+11 percent) from consumer business.

Dan Howdle, consumer telecoms expert at Cable.co.uk, said: “Customers should remember that under current rules, in the event of a price hike, they have the right to switch out of their contract free of charge.”
