Airtel plans to exit the music-streaming market as part of a content deal with Apple Music. The second largest telecom operator will shut down its Wynk music app and absorb all its employees into other operations.
Wynk music is India’s number one music streaming app in terms of downloads and daily active users. Airtel started Wynk music in 2014.
This development comes as Disney and Reliance Industries (RIL) work to secure antitrust approval for their $8.5 billion merger, which aims to create India’s largest entertainment company, Reuters news report said.
Bharti Airtel will partner with Apple to bring offers for Apple Music and Apple TV+ to its customers in India later this year. Airtel has 409 million customers in India. Airtel India revenues reached Rs 29,046 crore for Q1 fiscal 2024-25.
The telecom giant revealed on Tuesday that Apple TV+ will be included as part of Airtel’s Xstream video-streaming service for customers with premium Wi-Fi and postpaid plans. Additionally, users of Airtel’s music-streaming service, Wynk Premium, will gain access to special offers on Apple Music.
Airtel did not disclose the financial details of the partnership with Apple or the costs associated with the new plans.
