Telstra achieves 5G download speed of 5Gbps for a single user

Telstra announced the completion of a new 5G maximum download speed record on a commercial network of 5Gbps for a single user.
Telstra broadbandTelstra in partnership with telecom network maker Ericsson and chipset supplier Qualcomm performed the 5G NR data call at the 5G Innovation Centre on the Gold Coast using the commercial production network.

This world first, using the commercial production network and a smartphone form factor mobile test device, is a result of the effort to increase the speed capability of the network for all Telstra customers. This development will be driving commercial 5G mmWave in Australia in 2021.

Telstra in September 2020 achieved 4.2Gbps maximum download. The new milestone will see Telstra customers experience a more advanced network performance, paving the way for greater capacity and capabilities on the network.

Telstra reached a new maximum throughput speed record in the live network with the Ericsson Radio System complete base station for millimeter wave (mmWave), the Streetmacro 6701. Telstra achieved the throughput via NR carrier aggregation (CA) of eight 100MHz n257 mmWave carriers combined with LTE CA of two 20MHz Band 7 carriers.

Telstra used a smartphone form factor mobile test device, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System with 3rd generation Qualcomm QTM535 mmWave antenna modules.

“We have increased our network peak speed record as we deploy 5G and ready ourselves for this year’s upcoming mmWave spectrum auction,” Nikos Katinakis, group executive networks and IT, Telstra, said in a statement.
