Qualcomm, Siemens set up 5G SA network in 3.7-3.8 GHz band

qualcommQualcomm Technologies, in partnership with Siemens, has demonstrated a 5G standalone (SA) network in a real industrial environment in Germany using the 3.7-3.8GHz band.

The joint proof-of-concept project at the Siemens Automotive Test Center in Nuremberg, Germany, will be used to test 5G technologies, solve problems, and come up with solutions for the future of private wireless applications in industrial settings.

Qualcomm is providing the 5G test network and 5G industrial test devices while Siemens is supplying industrial end-devices like automated guided vehicles (AGV) and Simatic control systems.

The Siemens Automotive Test Center will also help in the testing of industrial technologies such as OPC UA and Profinet. In Germany, private networks can use the local broadband spectrum from 3.7-3.8 GHz, which has been reserved for industrial usage in local deployments.

The partnership between Qualcomm Technologies and Siemens has led to the development of the first 5G private standalone network in an industrial environment using the 3.7-3.8GHz band. This allows solutions to be tested and developed which the industry will be able to use with the upcoming Release 16 of the 5G standard, the company said.
