Ericsson announced its tech deal with Millicom’s TIGO to modernize its radio access network (RAN) in Paraguay and Honduras by supplying Ericsson Radio System.
Ericsson, the third largest telecom network maker, said it has delivered Ericsson Radio System to more than 240 service providers worldwide since its launch in 2015.
Sweden-based Ericsson was in the news recently when its telecom operator customers O2, a part of Telefonica, and SoftBank of Japan, revealed network issues that impacted mobile services to millions of phone customers.
Ericsson engineers will deploy Ericsson Radio System into approximately 1,000 of TIGO’s sites in Paraguay and Honduras in 2018 in the first phase.
Ericsson will be supplying Radio 2219 as well as Radio 4415 which come with full 4×4 MIMO capabilities. The deal includes indoor coverage through the Radio Dot System and micro radios for hotspot capacity in Paraguay. These installations will improve overall network quality and user experience for TIGO’s customers across those countries.
Ericsson will also expand TIGO’s existing network and modernize the existing 2G/3G and 4G sites, making the network the best fit for TIGO to deliver 5G and IoT services in the future, Xavier Rocoplan, chief technology and information officer at Millicom, said.
