NTT DOCOMO trials 5G with Huawei

Huawei 5G and NTT DOCOMONTT DOCOMO has achieved 4.52Gbps downlink throughput and 1.55Gbps uplink throughput over 1.2 km distance on the 28GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum during 5G trials in Japan with Huawei.

Huawei and NTT DOCOMO have conducted the 5G field trial at Tokyo Skytree in downtown Tokyo using a base station over 28GHz located at Tokyo Skytree’s viewing deck at a height of 340m above the ground, while user equipment was placed on the roof of a shopping facility at Asakusa Station.

NTT DOCOMO and Huawei achieved the 5G milestone under adverse conditions of a -10dBm penetration loss which came from the window glass of the viewing deck.

The Japan based telecom operator used Huawei’s 5G base station which supports Massive MIMO and beamforming technologies to support long distance data transmission over the 28GHz mmWave.

Huawei has provided 5G core network and 5G mmWave test user equipment to enable an end-to-end 5G network. Visitors to this open field trial experienced next generation video communication using a Microsoft HoloLens over the 5G network.

“The high-speed and long distance support is one of important technical challenges for 5G mmWave conditions. This long distance live-demo on a 5G mmWave is a groundbreaking achievement in our joint effort with NTT DOCOMO to build a fundamental 5G commercial environment,” said Gan Bin, vice president of Huawei 5G Product Line.
