Intel to invest $178 mn in India to expand R&D centre

Intel tabletsUS-based chip maker Intel Corporation will be investing $178 million in India to expand its Research and Development (R&D) centre in Bengaluru.

“We are investing $178 million in our upcoming R&D centre in Bengaluru as part of our India expansion plans,” said Intel India General Manager Nivruti Rai at a news conference.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and IT Minister Priyank Kharge were also present on the occasion.

Intel said India is Intel’s largest design center outside the U.S. The computer processing company has invested in hiring and developing talent, facilities, and innovation and entrepreneurship programs.

Intel India conducts advanced engineering work such as chip/system-on-chip design, graphics, software and platform for the cloud, devices and IoT markets involving tech areas such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and 5G.

The proposed facility will be located at Intel’s 44-acre campus on Sarjapur Ring Road in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

The R&D center will have approximately 620,000 sq. ft. of space. The new building with specialized infrastructure will be used for chip design and verification purposes. This additional capacity will help Intel India consolidate its R&D operations to a large extent at the SRR campus.
