Ericsson to expand workforce in Bangalore unit

Ericsson opens fourth Global Network Operations Center site in India

Telecom network vendor Ericsson today said it would expand its engineering workforce by 15 percent this year in its Bangalore unit.

In India, Ericsson has three R&D facilities in Gurgaon (Delhi-NCR), Chennai and Bangalore. The Bangalore unit focusses on IP, Cloud, SDN, multimedia telephony, and support solutions including billing, charging and mediation.

Ericsson India revenue in Q1 2015 increased 108 percent to SEK 3.5 billion with networks business contributing SEK 2.1 billion and SEK 1.1 billion.

Ericsson said its Bangalore R&D center employs 550 resources, working on ICT solutions for India as well as for global markets.
Ericsson, which competes with Huawei, Nokia Networks, ZTE, Alcatel-Lucent, etc. will be hiring in the areas of Cloud, IP Routing, Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and Virtual Platforms.

“This will help solidify our foundation and sharpen our focus in IP which continues to be an area of investment and growth for us,” said Sanjeev Tyagi, vice president and Head of Ericsson’s Business Unit Cloud & IP, R&D India.

Ericsson’s R&D centers in India have filed over 160 patents. Globally, Ericsson spent 36.3 billion SEK last year on R&D.

“The objective before the team is to build carrier grade IP routers and solutions which will help Ericsson build a leadership position in IP and we are intensely focused on achieving this objective,” Tyagi said.

In addition to the IP Edge portfolio, the Bangalore (Bengaluru) R&D team made contributions in Software Defined Networking (SDN) technologies.

Ericsson’s research team in Bengaluru is working on technologies that will play a prominent role in the Networked Society of the future. According to Ericsson estimates, there will be 26 billion connected devices in the world by 2020.
