MWC Shanghai 2015: Huawei highlights 4.5G/5G small cell portfolio

At Mobile World Congress (MWC), Shanghai, Huawei is highlighting its 4.5G/5G technologies in all Small Cell products.

The products, including those from LampSite, Pico, Micro, and Book RRU categories, help telecom network operators speed up the delivery of Mobile Broadband (MBB) services at a Gbit/s-level bandwidth, moving further towards realizing the 4.5G/5G era, the Chinese telecom network vendor said.

The company also demonstrated its 5G technologies on LampSite and Book RRU solutions made possible through joint efforts with China Mobile.

smaller base station becomes more popular

Huawei’s Small Cells have incorporated technologies for 4.5G and 5G networks to increase the air-interface data rate to the Gbit/s level, shorten the end-to-end service delay to within 10ms, and provide a 5m or higher positioning accuracy.

Thanks to these solutions, operators have the capacity to provide subscribers with a variety of value-added services and the best-ever MBB service experience.

Announcing these innovations, Eric Xu, Huawei’s Rotating and Acting CEO, said: “Network experience has become the primary productivity KPI, especially for network operators.”

Huawei said in the 4G, 4.5G era, indoor coverage will be the key to the success of telecom operators. In fact, traffic grows sharply after deploying indoor small cell. At the Zhengzhou railway station in China, indoor small deployments by China Unicom have assisted traffic to grow 340 percent to 64.4 GB per day from 18.8 GB per day earlier.

The deployment of small cell by Telkomsel in Indonesia assisted the telecom operator to grow data traffic by 200 percent to 469 GB on week-ends from 151 GB, while voice traffic rose to 272 from 137 on week-ends.

Huawei said currently, there is an imbalance in traffic distribution — 20 percent from outdoor and 80% from indoor. Small cell market will be 30 percent of total RAn in 2020. Huawei is expecting 18 times growth in small base station revenue in 2020, 6 times in 2015 and 3 times in 2014.

Zhou Yuefeng, president of the Huawei small cell product line, said: “For the first time in the global telecom industry, Huawei’s small cells have utilized the technologies for 4.5G and 5G networks to increase an air-interface data rate to the Gbit/s level, shorten the service delay to within 10 ms, provide a 5 m or higher positioning accuracy.
