Ericsson signs mobile network deal with Safaricom in Kenya

Ericsson today announced its mobile network deal with Safaricom, a telecom operator in Kenya.

As part of the mobile infrastructure upgrade deal, Ericsson will deploy Wi-Fi technology for the first time on the Safaricom network as well as enhance the MINI-LINK microwave transmission network to ensure better quality mobile broadband network in Kenya.

The deployment of the Wi-Fi solution is aimed at optimizing spectrum resources while enhancing 3G services. Safaricom customers will also benefit from broadband app coverage in selected populated areas.

Ericsson in a statement said that its MINI-LINK microwave and IP products will enable Safaricom to migrate to an all-IP transmission network that supports coming technologies and Safaricom’s five-year network evolution strategy. Ericsson SSR 8000 also provides Safaricom with a consolidated platform for both fixed and mobile services for IP/MPLS routing.

“As we move into an era where the customer experience is re-defining our networks, this deal will place us in an optimal position to continue to grow our data footprint, especially in populated areas such as the CBD, in the most cost-efficient manner,” said Thibaud Rerolle, director, Technology at Safaricom.
