Alcatel-Lucent to supply 7950 XRS to China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile

Telecom network vendor Alcatel-Lucent today said it will supply the 7950 XRS (Extensible Routing System) to China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile.

The three biggest telecommunications service providers in China will utilize 7950 XRS, which can handle multiple Terabits of data per second, for their IP-based core networking needs to address demand for fixed and mobile broadband access.

The 7950 XRS core router provides telecom operators with up to five times the data capacity of other core routers on the market. The 7950 XRS can save on reduced footprint and power costs by 50 percent over a five-year period of network growth.

Michel Combes, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, said: “The experience gained in China will lay a foundation for future deployments of the 7950 XRS across the entire region of APAC.”

The selection of the 7950 XRS is the result of a recent central bidding process for IP core routers. The deployments will mark the first scale commercial use of the system in China and will contribute to China’s national Broadband China strategy.

From China Telecom, Alcatel-Lucent bagged orders for core router in Jiangsu province and Shanghai city, two areas with the highest demand for network traffic, out of the five bidding areas.

For China Unicom and China Mobile, Alcatel-Lucent will be the sole supplier.
