Telefónica’s Capex up 13.4% to €1.94 billion in first quarter 2013

Telecom Lead Europe: Telefónica’s Capex (capital expenditure) rose 13.4 percent to €1.94 billion in the first quarter of 2013.

The European mobile operator’s Capex included €695 million for buying spectrum in U.K. (€671 million) and Uruguay (€24 million).

The telecom giant has spent around 82 percent of the Capex on growth and transformation projects. It focused on expanding fixed and mobile high-speed broadband services.

Telefónica’s first quarter revenue declined 8.8 percent to €14.14 billion.

Exchange rate fluctuations impacted the revenue growth.

Telefónica posted 20.6 percent increase in net profit to €902 million in the first quarter of 2013.

Telefónica had 315.7 million accesses in March, 2013, up 2 percent.

Out of this, mobile accesses stood at 247.3 million, up 3 percent.

Mobile broadband accesses increased 34 percent to surpass 55 million.

Telefónica’s mobile broadband accounted for 22 percent of mobile accesses, up 5 percent.

Regional Performance

Telefónica Latinoamérica accounted for 67 percent of the total accesses.

Telefónica’s Latin American revenue decreased 8.8 percent to €14.14 billion.

Telefónica Latinoamérica accounted for 51 percent of consolidated revenues, up 2.7 percent.

Telefónica Europe contribution to revenues fell to 47 percent of the total.

Telefónica España’s contribution was 23 percent of consolidated revenues.

Brazil is now ahead of Spain for the first time as the main market in terms of revenue contribution.

Mobile data revenue rose 9.5 percent and accounted for 37 percent of mobile service revenues.

Non-SMS mobile data revenues increased 21.9 percent  represent 62 percent of total mobile data revenues (56 percent in the first quarter of 2012).
