Airtel’s Sunil Mittal appointed as vice chairman of International Chamber of Commerce

Telecom Lead India: Bharti Airtel’s Sunil Mittal is the new vice chairman of International Chamber of Commerce.

International Chamber of Commerce is the largest, most representative business organization in the world.

Its network comprises over 6 million companies, chambers of commerce and business associations in more than 130 countries, with interests spanning every sector of private enterprise.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman and group CEO, Bharti Enterprises, has becomes the third business person from India in the history of ICC to be appointed to this position.

The ICC World Council elected the new ICC leaders including Mittal at a meeting held in Doha, Qatar.

The past Chairmen of ICC from India were business leaders late Hari Shankar Singhania (1993-1994), and late Bharat Ram (1969-1971), who was also the first Indian to be appointed as the chairman of the ICC Executive Board.

Founded in 1919, ICC advocates for free trade and the market economy, working through a network of national committees and direct members in over 130 countries.

ICC was awarded the highest level consultative status with the United Nations (UN) in 1946, and since then has represented the private sector by engaging in a broad range of activities with the UN and its specialized agencies.

Sunil Mittal said, “ICC is playing an important role in driving global economic growth by reducing barriers to trade and economic opportunity. I look forward to working with the distinguished members of the ICC towards taking forward this agenda and addressing the needs of the international business community.”
Sunil Mittal is a member of several international bodies – Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Reuters Editorial Advisory Board, Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council, Telecom Board of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the leading UN Agency and also a Commissioner of the Broadband Commission at ITU. He is a member of the India-US CEO Forum, the India- UK CEO Forum and India Japan Business Leaders Forum. Appointed by the Prime Minister of India, he is also the Co-Chair of the India-Africa Business Council and the India-Sri Lanka CEO Forum.
