Ericsson lands Japan’s SoftBank Mobile deal for routers

Telecom Lead Europe: Japan’s SoftBank Mobile will deploy Ericsson’s SSR 8000 of Smart Services Routers as its main Evolved Packet Core (EPC) packet gateway node.

Last year, SoftBank Mobile announced that it would tap Ericsson would deploy an Evolved HSPA radio access network for 900MHz band spectrum. Ericsson would deploy RBS 6000 multi-standard radio base stations in the Tomeihan area.

Ericsson’s rival Nokia Siemens Networks is SoftBank Mobile’s technology supplier to upgrade its mobile broadband capability across Japan. Nokia Siemens Networks will also supply, deploy and integrate 4G, FDD-LTE network.

Junichi Miyakawa, executive vice president, director & CTO of SoftBank Mobile, said: “The data volume explosion is evident in Japan, where we have densely populated cities with users who are early adopters of technology.”

On Friday, Ericsson said SoftBank Mobile will implement SSR 8000 family of Smart Services Routers to secure network quality despite the high load caused by the data explosion.

Ericsson claims that as a consolidated platform for both fixed- and mobile network applications, Smart Services Routers make convergence a reality – thereby simplifying operations and reducing cost of ownership.
