Why Is 5G Internet Slow in India? Network Congestion, Spectrum, Signal Strength and Backhaul Explained

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and BSNL face growing pressure to deliver faster mobile internet as India’s 5G data consumption increases. However, a 5G symbol on a smartphone does not guarantee high download speeds, low latency or uninterrupted connectivity.

Customers frequently experience slow 5G internet in crowded commercial areas, apartment buildings, railway stations, airports and residential neighbourhoods. The main reasons include network congestion, insufficient spectrum capacity, weak indoor signals and inadequate fibre backhaul.

According to Nokia’s Mobile Broadband India Traffic Index 2026, India’s monthly mobile data traffic reached 27.6 exabytes in 2025, increasing 28 percent year over year. Monthly 5G traffic surged 70 percent to 12.9 exabytes, representing 46.8 percent of total mobile data traffic.

Average monthly mobile data consumption reached 31.1 GB per user, highlighting the growing demand on telecom infrastructure.

1. Network Congestion: Too Many 5G Users Sharing Tower Capacity

Network congestion occurs when many subscribers simultaneously access the same mobile cell for video streaming, gaming, downloads, digital payments and video conferencing.

Even when a smartphone displays a strong 5G signal, download speeds can decline because the available radio capacity is shared among active users.

TRAI reported that wireless mobile data consumption reached 84,424 petabytes during April–June 2026, increasing 8.30 percent from 77,953 petabytes in the preceding quarter.

Average monthly wireless data usage per subscriber increased 6.32 percent to 28.39 GB.

Reliance Jio reported approximately 300 million 5G customers and 542 million total subscribers in its October 2026 financial disclosures. Monthly data consumption reached 44.2 GB per user, compared with 38.7 GB a year earlier.

This growth requires additional radio capacity, more network sites and stronger transmission infrastructure.

Bharti Airtel reported deploying more than 2,900 new 5G sites across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir over 12 months, covering 77 districts and more than 28.6 million customers.

Airtel also deployed more than 2,750 sites across 36 districts in Gujarat, serving a coverage area associated with over 41 million customers.

Network densification can improve performance by distributing traffic across additional cells.

Equipment vendors Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung Networks, Huawei and ZTE supply radio access network technologies used to increase mobile network capacity.

2. Spectrum Availability: Why 5G Speeds Differ Between Operators

Spectrum determines how much wireless capacity an operator can deliver within a particular coverage area.

India’s 5G networks use mid-band spectrum around 3.3 GHz, while 26 GHz millimetre-wave spectrum offers additional capacity over shorter distances.

Lower-frequency spectrum generally provides wider coverage and better building penetration.

Operators with different spectrum holdings, deployed bandwidth and network configurations can deliver substantially different speeds.

Reliance Jio operates a 5G Standalone network, while Bharti Airtel has used 5G Non-Standalone architecture alongside its network evolution.

Vodafone Idea has been expanding its 5G footprint through phased deployments. In March 2026, Vi announced plans to extend services to 90 additional cities by May, expanding from 43 cities across 17 priority circles to 133 cities.

However, launching 5G in additional cities does not guarantee identical network capacity across all neighbourhoods.

Spectrum utilization technologies from Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and Mavenir include carrier aggregation, advanced antenna systems and radio optimization.

These technologies can improve capacity, provided operators deploy sufficient spectrum and supporting infrastructure.

3. Weak 5G Signal: Why Indoor Internet Can Be Slower

A phone may display 5G coverage while receiving a weak or interference-affected signal.

Concrete walls, metal structures, coated glass, underground parking areas and distance from mobile towers can reduce signal quality.

When signal quality deteriorates, the network may use more robust but slower transmission settings, reducing available throughput.

TRAI’s July 2026 assessment across Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly covered 309.7 km of city routes, 10 hotspots and 2.8 km of walk tests.

In mixed mobile technology mode, poor-signal samples were 122 for Airtel, 181 for Jio, 401 for Vi and 3,904 for BSNL, from approximately 65,000 samples per operator.

These were not exclusively 5G measurements.

The TRAI network quality assessment for Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly demonstrates how coverage quality varies across operators and locations.

Indoor coverage can be improved using distributed antenna systems, small cells and dedicated indoor radio infrastructure.

CommScope, Corning, Comba Telecom, SOLiD and Ericsson provide technologies relevant to indoor mobile connectivity.

Projects at airports, shopping centres, hospitals, office campuses and railway stations can benefit from these solutions, particularly where outdoor tower signals cannot penetrate buildings effectively.

4. Fibre Backhaul: Why Strong 5G Signals Still Deliver Slow Downloads

Backhaul connects mobile radio sites to an operator’s transport and core networks.

Even when a tower provides strong 5G radio coverage, insufficient backhaul capacity can restrict the internet speeds available to customers.

Operators generally use optical fibre or microwave transmission to connect mobile sites.

Growing 5G traffic and fixed wireless access demand make backhaul capacity increasingly important.

Nokia’s MBiT Index 2026 reported that fixed wireless access accounted for more than 25 percent of India’s 5G data traffic.

This creates additional demand on mobile networks because fixed wireless broadband customers can consume substantial data through home routers.

Reliance Jio’s JioAirFiber and Airtel’s Xstream AirFiber illustrate how operators use 5G networks to provide residential broadband connectivity.

These services create revenue opportunities but also require adequate radio and backhaul capacity.

Technology vendors Ciena, Nokia, Cisco, Juniper Networks, Infinera and Tejas Networks provide optical transport, routing and transmission technologies relevant to mobile backhaul upgrades.

However, comparable operator-specific 5G backhaul capacity figures are not available in the cited reports.

5. Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL: Real-World Mobile Internet Speed Comparison

The nPerf India Mobile Internet Barometer 2026, covering April 2025 to March 2026, provides real-user measurements of mobile internet performance.

OperatorDownload speedUpload speedLatency
Airtel113.81 Mbps16.84 Mbps58.98 ms
Reliance Jio94.22 Mbps8.97 Mbps62.09 ms
Vodafone Idea75.80 Mbps14.51 Mbps111.60 ms
BSNL15.11 Mbps5.45 Mbps66.49 ms

Airtel led the reported download, upload and latency measurements, followed by Jio in download performance.

Vi delivered higher upload speeds than Jio but recorded substantially higher latency.

BSNL recorded the lowest download and upload speeds among the four operators.

These figures reflect the report’s measurement methodology and observation period rather than guaranteed performance at every location. BSNL’s results should not be interpreted as evidence of nationwide commercial 5G availability.

6. BSNL’s 4G Expansion and Vodafone Idea’s 5G Rollout

BSNL is expanding its indigenous 4G network using technology supplied by a consortium involving TCS, Tejas Networks and C-DOT.

The government reported that 97,672 4G sites had been installed and 95,511 were operational as of January 15, 2026.

The equipment is designed to support future 5G upgrades.

BSNL’s network modernization requires continued investment in radio coverage, transmission capacity and core-network infrastructure.

Vodafone Idea is expanding 5G coverage and strengthening its existing mobile network through additional equipment deployment and network densification.

The operator works with major telecom technology vendors, including Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung, on network modernization.

These investments can improve performance where additional spectrum, radio capacity and backhaul are deployed.

7. Why 5G Speeds Change During the Day

Mobile network performance can vary significantly between morning, afternoon and evening.

Residential cells may become congested during evening video-streaming hours, while commercial districts experience higher traffic during working hours.

Large events, railway stations, airports and shopping centres can generate sudden increases in mobile data demand.

Smartphone capabilities also matter. Different devices support different 5G bands, carrier aggregation combinations, modem capabilities and antenna configurations.

A 5G-compatible phone therefore may not support every feature available on an operator’s network.

What Telecom Operators Must Improve

For Reliance Jio and Airtel, maintaining 5G performance requires continued investment in network capacity, spectrum efficiency, fibre backhaul and coverage densification as data consumption grows.

Vodafone Idea needs to expand 5G availability while strengthening network capacity across existing service areas.

BSNL must improve 4G coverage, transmission infrastructure and network performance as it prepares for future 5G deployment.

For customers, a practical way to identify slow 5G internet is to compare speeds at different times and locations, test near a window or outdoors, check device compatibility and compare performance with another operator.

The central issue is that 5G coverage and 5G capacity are not the same. A smartphone can display a 5G symbol while experiencing slow internet because of congestion, limited spectrum, poor signal quality or insufficient backhaul.
