France’s Telecom Shake-Up: €20B SFR Deal Could Redraw Europe’s Mobile Market

French telecom giants Bouygues, Orange, and Iliad-owned Free are preparing to notify regulators for approval of their €20.35 billion ($23.5 billion) acquisition of Altice France’s SFR. The deal, one of Europe’s largest telecom transactions in recent years, would dismantle SFR and redistribute its assets among the three buyers — reducing France’s mobile operators from four to three. Bouygues would take the largest share, followed by Iliad and Orange. The companies are now awaiting clarity on whether French or EU authorities will lead the antitrust review. The move challenges the EU’s traditional stance of maintaining four operators per market and could reshape Europe’s telecom consolidation landscape.

Telcos Redefine Their Role in Private 5G: From Connectivity Providers to Hybrid Digital Orchestrators

Telecom operators are repositioning themselves in the evolving private 5G market, shifting from traditional network providers to end-to-end digital solution partners focused on hybrid and outcome-driven deployments. Industry players like Telefonica Tech, O2 Business, and Proximus Global are increasingly offering integrated platforms that combine private 5G, public networks, Wi-Fi, edge computing, and AI to simplify enterprise adoption. While private 5G deployments have grown, they remain below early expectations due to high costs, complexity, and fragmented adoption across industries. However, falling infrastructure costs, improved devices, and use cases such as predictive maintenance, logistics, and industrial automation are improving momentum. By 2030, telcos expect more hybrid networks combining terrestrial and satellite connectivity, with edge AI enabling robotics, digital twins, and mission-critical industrial applications at scale.

MTN Leads Africa’s Telecom Shift with Bold Push for Shared Network Infrastructure

MTN Group is advancing a major shift toward shared telecom infrastructure across African markets as operators face rising deployment costs and pressure to expand coverage faster. The strategy focuses on network sharing agreements that allow companies to jointly use towers, fibre, and radio access systems instead of duplicating expensive infrastructure. This approach is expected to reduce capital expenditure, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate rollout of 4G and 5G services, especially in underserved rural areas. It also supports stronger competition in digital services and mobile money ecosystems, which have become central to Africa’s economy. However, regulators must balance collaboration with fair competition to avoid market dominance issues. The move signals a broader industry transition toward cooperation-driven growth in Africa’s telecom sector.
