Nigeria’s Digital Leap: 20 Million People Set to Gain Telecom Access Through Massive Network Expansion

Nigeria is accelerating its digital transformation efforts through the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project (NUCAP), a major telecom expansion initiative designed to connect more than 20 million people in underserved and unserved communities. The project will deploy 3,700 modern telecommunications towers, with a strong focus on rural and riverine regions that currently lack reliable network coverage. Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, highlighted the project’s role in bridging the digital divide and expanding access to education, economic opportunities, innovation, and digital services. Backed by the China Industrial Bank, which has committed support for at least 1,000 tower sites, the initiative represents a significant investment in digital infrastructure and a major step toward achieving broader nationwide connectivity and inclusive economic growth.

AI Gold Rush Sends Telecom Costs Soaring, Ericsson and Nokia Warn

The rise of artificial intelligence is creating unexpected cost pressures across the telecommunications industry, according to Ericsson and Nokia. Both network equipment giants have warned that surging demand for AI infrastructure is driving up semiconductor and component prices while extending supply lead times. As hyperscalers and AI companies compete for advanced chips, telecom vendors face higher production costs for 5G and network equipment. Ericsson executives noted that rising AI-related chip expenses are already affecting profitability and may require cost-sharing with customers. Industry analysts suggest telecom operators could ultimately bear these higher costs through more expensive network deployments and upgrades. The trend highlights how AI’s explosive growth is reshaping global supply chains and increasing financial pressures across the telecom ecosystem.

AI Infrastructure Boom: OGX and Nokia Team Up to Build Future-Ready Networks

OGX Group has partnered with Nokia Malaysia to strengthen its portfolio of networking and infrastructure solutions as demand for AI-driven and cloud-based technologies accelerates. The collaboration will enable OGX to offer advanced capabilities in enterprise networking, resilient connectivity, data centre interconnectivity, AI-ready infrastructure, and network modernisation. By adding Nokia’s technologies to its ecosystem, OGX aims to expand support for system integrators, enterprises, public sector agencies, and data centre operators seeking secure, scalable, and high-performance digital infrastructure. The partnership is expected to create new business opportunities while helping customers manage growing data demands, cloud adoption, and AI workloads. The move reflects the increasing focus on building robust digital infrastructure to support next-generation AI and enterprise innovation.
