Orange Moves to Secure Regulatory Path for €20.35bn SFR Takeover Bid
Orange has begun early regulatory discussions as it prepares a joint bid with Bouygues and Iliad to acquire French telecom operator SFR from Altice France in a deal valued at about €20.35 billion. The proposed transaction would reduce France’s mobile market from four operators to three, triggering significant antitrust scrutiny from European regulators. Orange CEO Christel Heydemann said the company is proactively engaging authorities to smooth approval and is considering possible remedies to address competition concerns. The three telecom firms remain in exclusive negotiations, with each expected to file separately for regulatory clearance. No binding agreement has been signed yet, and the exclusivity window for talks runs until mid-May, making regulatory approval a critical next step.
Claro Signals Bigger Brazil Expansion Plans After Desktop Deal
Telecom operator Claro, owned by Mexico’s América Móvil, has said it remains open to further acquisitions in Brazil following its agreement to buy a 73 percent stake in broadband provider Desktop. The deal, valued at around 4 billion reais, strengthens Claro’s fiber-optic presence in Brazil’s most important market. Claro’s Brazil CEO Rodrigo Marques said the company evaluates all opportunities but only pursues deals aligned with customer needs. The Desktop acquisition, still awaiting approval from regulators CADE and Anatel, reflects Claro’s strategy to expand its nationwide telecom footprint, especially in high-growth regions like São Paulo, while continuing selective consolidation in Brazil’s competitive broadband sector.
TRAI Slaps ₹21.07 Lakh Penalty on Bharti Airtel Over QoS Breach
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has imposed a penalty of ₹21,07,116.60 on Bharti Airtel for non-compliance with Quality of Service (QoS) norms related to metering and billing accuracy for the financial year 2021–22. The order, received on April 22, 2026, was disclosed by Airtel under SEBI listing requirements. TRAI stated that the violation falls under the Code of Practice for Metering and Billing Accuracy Regulations, 2006, highlighting lapses in adherence to regulatory standards. Bharti Airtel has disagreed with the decision and indicated it will take appropriate steps to challenge the penalty. The action is limited to a monetary fine and does not impose any operational restrictions on the telecom operator.
