The telecom industry is innovating through 5G technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). Airtel has introduced AI-based solutions to reduce spam calls and messages. Reliance Jio Builds Own 5G Network, Cuts Costs, Reaches 213mn Subscribers

Reliance Jio has developed its own 5G infrastructure, reducing dependence on global vendors like Ericsson and Nokia. The company manufactures 5G small cells and radio units near Chennai through a joint venture with Sanmina Corp. This approach has lowered deployment costs by up to 60 percent and increased network control. By June 2025, Jio had 213 million 5G subscribers, adding 43 million in six months. Its fixed wireless access service, JioAirFiber, has nearly 7.4 million subscribers. Jio’s cloud-native 5G core is ready for export.

MTN Drives Telecom Innovation in Africa by Combining Connectivity with Community Impact

MTN is shifting its role in Africa by integrating community development into its business strategy. The company highlights that providing internet access alone is not enough; it must also focus on affordable technology, education, health, and sustainability to create impact. MTN is making devices and services accessible to prepare future customers, developing digital skills and literacy to address youth unemployment, and using mobile infrastructure and partnerships to improve access to care through investments in health centers, maternity wards, and mobile clinics. The company is also committing to carbon neutrality by 2040 and deploying solar-powered sites.

Nigeria Telecoms Resume SIM Swaps After Weeks-Long Disruption Linked to NIMC Platform Upgrade

Telecom operators in Nigeria have resumed SIM swap services following a disruption caused by the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) migration to a new identity verification platform. MTN and Airtel confirmed the resumption, stating that NIMC services are now operational. The disruption affected millions of subscribers, halting SIM swaps, replacements, and new activations. The migration aimed to improve identity verification processes. Operators worked with NIMC and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to resolve integration challenges.
