Nokia tests elastic networking for reducing energy consumption

Nokia has announced the completion of a Proof of Concept (PoC) in collaboration with NTT and Anritsu Corporation.

This PoC demonstrated the effectiveness of Elastic networking in reducing energy consumption in mobile networks. The project is part of the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) Global Forum initiative, which aims to develop advanced networking technologies for improved efficiency and performance.

Elastic networking is designed to optimize network resource allocation dynamically, allowing network components to be switched off or put into hibernation when they are not needed. By shifting network resources from a secondary destination to a primary destination, operators can minimize unnecessary power consumption while maintaining seamless connectivity for end users.

In cases of sudden traffic spikes, the system can instantly reallocate resources as needed, ensuring uninterrupted service, particularly in densely populated urban areas. This innovative technology is expected to support future bandwidth demands driven by artificial intelligence (AI) while significantly reducing energy usage for network operators like NTT.

The PoC utilized Nokia’s high-performance optical solutions, including the 1830 Time-sensitive Packet Switch (TPS) and 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS). These advanced optical networking solutions played a critical role in demonstrating the feasibility of Elastic networking in real-world scenarios.

James Watt, Vice President and General Manager of the Optical Networks Division at Nokia, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing energy efficiency across its product portfolio. He stated that reducing power consumption is a top priority for Nokia as part of its broader goal to lower the carbon footprint of its customers.

James Watt highlighted that the successful PoC showcases the resilience and performance of Nokia’s optical products and reiterated the company’s dedication to working with IOWN GF and other industry players to further optimize wireless network power consumption without sacrificing performance.

Takeshi Shima, Director, Board Member, Senior Vice President, and President of the Test and Measurement Company at Anritsu, reaffirmed Anritsu’s commitment to supporting industry efforts aimed at improving energy efficiency. He expressed pride in contributing to the IOWN GF industry-first PoC, underlining the significance of this achievement in advancing sustainable networking solutions.
