The fire broke out early Saturday, leaving 10 workers with minor injuries and halting operations at the facility. Rescue teams are still clearing debris, and authorities are maintaining fire engines on-site to prevent further damage, Reuters news report said.

“We have stationed fire engines at the plant as there are chances of a follow-up fire incident,” said M. Velu, a district fire officer. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Photos shared by District Collector K. M. Sarayu on social media revealed extensive damage, with charred machinery and collapsing ceilings.

Tata Electronics, a key supplier for Apple’s iPhone production in India, is investigating the incident, but Apple has not yet commented. Emergency protocols at the plant ensured the safety of employees, according to Tata.

The plant plays a critical role in producing iPhone back panels and other components. Another building in the complex, set to begin iPhone assembly later this year, may also be affected by the fire.

Apple is looking to expand its manufacturing base in India as part of its strategy to diversify production outside of China. Apple has shipped 229.1 million iPhones in 2023 grabbing 20 percent share in the global smartphone market, according to Canalys. Apple has generated revenue of $383.2 billion from the sale of iPhones last year.
