T-Mobile US and Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier have announced a major leap forward in the world of telecommunications – 5G Standalone (5G SA) roaming, enabling unparalleled connectivity for customers worldwide.
The successful testing of 5G SA roaming has been completed by T-Mobile US and Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, leveraging Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier’s Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP). This achievement marks a significant milestone as the world’s first hosted SEPP 5G SA roaming, fostering seamless interconnectivity between carriers across the globe.
5G SA roaming empowers customers to travel internationally while maintaining access to the optimal 5G experience, regardless of their location. Domestic and international network providers are now offered enhanced roaming capabilities, ensuring their customers can revel in the benefits of 5G SA while traveling.
The 5G SA roaming tests program utilized Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier’s Internet Protocol Exchange (IPX) and Hosted Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) solutions, seamlessly connected carriers Sunrise and AIS Thailand, facilitating 5G SA roaming between the U.S. and Switzerland, as well as the U.S. and Thailand.
Ulf Ewaldsson, President of Technology at T-Mobile US, expressed enthusiasm for this development, stating, “Our customers already enjoy roaming benefits in more than 215 countries and destinations, and 5G SA roaming opens the door for even faster speeds and increased reliability, enabling emerging technologies like network slicing.”
This achievement in 5G SA roaming, not yet commercially available, marks a significant step toward an enhanced mobile experience for travelers and businesses conducting operations abroad. The benefits of 5G SA roaming are immense, including an enriched customer experience with faster speeds, lower latency, and higher capacity compared to Non-Standalone (NSA) networks.
This translates to superior connectivity, paving the way for the widespread adoption of emerging technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, IoT applications, network slicing, private networks, and more. Additionally, 5G SA roaming supports massive IoT deployments and critical IoT applications, catering to enterprises relying on real-time data for their operations.
T-Mobile US and Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier are trailblazers in ushering in a new era of global connectivity through 5G SA roaming, promising a future of enhanced communication and innovation.
“Our Hosted SEPP capability has proven very successful during our PoC phase last year and we are thrilled to now enter the technical readiness phase together with T-Mobile US, Sunrise, and AIS,” said Nicholas Nikrouyan, Vice President, Voice & Mobile Solutions at Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier.
“5G SA Roaming is a highly innovative service for ultra-fast data transmission, which efficiently supports a vast number of use cases,” said Saran Phaloprakarn, Head of Mobile and Consumer Products Department at AIS Thailand.
