Huawei shines in microwave transmission equipment market

Microwave transmission equipment market grew two percent in 2022 to $3 billion, driven by 7 percent rise in mobile backhaul, according to Dell’Oro Group.

E-band radio shipments achieved double-digit growth in 4Q 2022 due to the start of 5G rollouts in India. Radio transceiver shipments grew nearly 40 percent. Indian telecoms including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are in the process of expanding their 5G network coverage across the country.

“Demand for microwave Transmission is on the rise as 5G deployments expand,” Jimmy Yu, Vice President at Dell’Oro Group, said. “We are expecting this growth trend to continue for many more years.”

Mobile network operators installed more wireless backhaul, driving a large increase in demand for microwave transmission equipment in 2022. Mobile backhaul demand is projected to increase at five percent in 2023.

Component shortages began to ease in late 2022. By the fourth quarter, the revenue shortfall from inadequate supply declined to only a percent.

Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia are the leaders in Microwave transmission equipment market in terms of revenue share in 2022. Among these top three manufacturers, Huawei was the only vendor to increase its share in the microwave transmission equipment market. The report did not mention the share of Huawei.

Huawei has regained two percentage points of microwave transmission equipment market share in 2022. Huawei significantly improved its share across all regions with the exception of countries that exclude Huawei gear for geopolitical reasons.
