Virgin Media O2 has announced a significant leap forward in its mobile network capabilities with the activation of its 5G Standalone network in 14 cities across the United Kingdom.

Accessible to consumers equipped with 5G Standalone-compatible SIM cards and devices, this enhanced network will seamlessly transition between 4G, 5G, and 5G Standalone connectivity, ensuring optimal performance across various usage scenarios.

Unlike previous iterations of 5G, which relied on elements of the 4G network, Virgin Media O2’s Standalone network promises to unlock a myriad of innovative applications, including autonomous transport solutions, remote healthcare services, and fully automated manufacturing processes. Furthermore, it enables network slicing, facilitating tailored services for augmented reality, gaming, and other business applications.
