Orange Group has tapped Nokia to achieve more progress in the development of 5G services for both industries and consumers.
Ericsson earlier this month said test equipment has shown wireless communication with peak rates beyond 10Gbps for the first time in France, thanks to key enablers of the future 5G technology. This trial is part of the 5G partnership announced by Ericsson and Orange in October 2016.
“These ever-increasing speeds will be needed for new use cases such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, or the needs of business environments. Thanks to our 5G partnership with Ericsson, we are preparing the future of networks,” said Alain Maloberti, senior VP of Orange Labs Networks.
Nokia says 5G’s new capabilities such as network slicing will allow operators to support billions of connected IoT devices with consistent quality of service, laying the foundation for smarter cities, connected vehicles, smart factories and offices, remote healthcare and other connected industries.
Nokia and Orange will drive the definition and development of these new services, with a focus on making the transition from 4G to 5G network connectivity. Efficiency in power, operations, and cost effectiveness, quality and reliability will be some of the focus areas.
Orange and Nokia will build on existing innovation programs, as well as work with other partners, to develop, trial and introduce solutions that will make 5G a commercial reality and drive the digital transformation of vertical industries.
Nokia and Orange will leverage Nokia Flexi Base Station and 5G-ready AirScale radio access portfolio, the AirFrame data center platform, telco cloud and cybersecurity technologies to create applications making use of 5G’s latency and reliability.
“With our Radio, IP and Optics technologies, and the expertise of Bell Labs, Nokia is assisting Orange in the introduction of 5G and the application of the Future X Network paradigm,” said Marc Rouanne, chief innovation and operating officer at Nokia.
