5G services will grow rapidly in India: Opensignal

The Opensignal report reveals that India already has a large addressable market for 5G – approximately 9.7 percent of smartphones in use in India are 5G capable.

This suggests that that the uptake of 5G services in India could be relatively rapid compared to many other markets once these services are launched commercially.

Both Airtel and Reliance Jio will be launching their 5G services in select cities during the current year. Vodafone Idea is yet to announce its 5G plans.

Indian 5G smartphone users see up to 53 percent faster overall download speeds: Users of 5G-capable devices typically see between 30-53 percent faster download speeds than non-5G smartphone users. This is because 5G models tend to have better specifications such as up-to-date modems, chipsets and radio design that also enable a high-quality 4G experience.

Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of 5G smartphone models, representing 14 percent of all 5G-capable smartphones in India. Next is Bihar (9.3 percent), followed by Maharashtra (8.5 percent) and Gujarat (7.7 percent).  Delhi is the first Metro circle to appear on the list, in the 7th slot, with 6.7 percent.

Among Indian cities, Delhi and Hyderabad have the most 5G smartphone users: Delhi accounts for 10.8 percent of 5G smartphone users in cities, just ahead of Hyderabad (10.3 percent), which is one of India’s biggest tech hubs. Mumbai and Bangalore are next on the list with identical proportions of 5G-capable devices — 6.6 percent.
