Jio Leads Chennai Mobile Download Speed at 303 Mbps; Airtel Tops Upload Speed in TRAI Network Test

Chennai Mobile Network Performance 2026: Reliance Jio delivered the fastest average mobile download speed in Chennai at 302.97 Mbps, while Bharti Airtel recorded the highest average upload speed at 34.21 Mbps, according to drive test conducted by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The network assessment also showed significant differences among Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and BSNL in coverage, dropped calls and voice reliability across Chennai.

TRAI conducts Independent Drive Tests across telecom service areas to measure real-world mobile network quality and provide consumers with information about operator performance.

TRAI Tests Chennai Mobile Networks Across 233 Km

The Chennai Independent Drive Test was conducted between July 15 and July 17, 2026, covering 232.8 km of city routes, seven hotspot locations and 9.9 km of walk tests.

The routes included Tiruneermalai, Pammal, St. Thomas Mount, Guindy, Saidapet, Alwarpet, Mylapore, Egmore, George Town, Royapuram, Toll Gate, Kilpauk, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, Puliambedu, Chembarambakkam and Kanadapalayam, among other locations.

Tests used live voice and data sessions with SIM cards from the four operators across available 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks. TRAI’s IDT programme is designed to measure actual network experience across cities, highways, hotspots and other usage environments.

Jio Leads Chennai Download Speed at 302.97 Mbps

Reliance Jio emerged as the clear leader for average mobile download performance in Chennai.

Jio recorded download speed of 302.97 Mbps across its 5G and 4G networks. Airtel was second with 125.49 Mbps, while Vodafone Idea achieved 38.76 Mbps across its 5G, 4G and 2G networks.

BSNL, tested on its 3G network in the supplied TRAI results, recorded download speed of only 11.40 Mbps.

The gap is substantial. Jio’s download speed was around 2.4 times Airtel’s, nearly 7.8 times Vi’s and more than 26 times BSNL’s.

The results underline how deployment of high-capacity 5G networks is reshaping the mobile network performance in India, particularly in large urban markets where mobile data consumption is high.

Airtel Beats Jio in Upload Speed

The ranking changed when TRAI measured average upload performance.

Airtel delivered the fastest upload speed at 34.21 Mbps, ahead of Jio at 30.43 Mbps. Vi followed with 25.22 Mbps, while BSNL recorded 6.37 Mbps.

The relatively strong upload performance of Airtel and Vi is important because upload capacity increasingly affects video calls, social media uploads, cloud applications and other interactive services.

Airtel Records Lowest Poor-Signal Rate

Network speed alone does not determine customer experience. TRAI’s coverage measurements show Airtel performing particularly strongly in signal availability.

Airtel recorded only 43 poor-signal samples out of 57,398 samples, equivalent to roughly 0.07 percent.

Vi recorded 54 poor-signal samples from 56,842, or about 0.10 percent, while Jio registered 159 from 55,815, equivalent to approximately 0.28 percent.

BSNL showed the largest coverage challenge, with 1,072 poor-signal samples among 56,431, representing around 1.9 percent.

This means BSNL’s incidence of poor-signal samples was more than 25 times Airtel’s during the tested Chennai routes.

Jio and Vi Record Zero Limited-Service Samples

Another important measure was the number of samples where users experienced limited service or effectively no usable coverage.

Jio and Vi recorded zero limited-service samples during the drive test.

Airtel recorded just 7 out of 57,398 samples, while BSNL registered 191 limited-service samples from 56,431.

The findings indicate that Jio and Vi provided particularly consistent basic network availability along the tested routes, while Airtel was also close to complete coverage.

TRAI’s drive-test programme complements its broader Quality of Service monitoring of Indian telecom networks, helping identify localised coverage and performance problems that may not be visible from nationwide network statistics.

Airtel Records Zero Dropped Calls

Airtel delivered the strongest dropped-call result, recording zero dropped calls from 500 successfully established calls.

Jio recorded one dropped call from 514 calls, representing about 0.19 percent, while Vi registered one from 508, or around 0.20 percent.

BSNL recorded 12 dropped calls from 499 successfully established calls, equivalent to approximately 2.4 percent.

The results therefore show a considerable gap between BSNL and the three private operators in voice-call reliability on the routes tested.

OperatorDropped CallsApprox. Drop Rate
Airtel0 / 5000%
Jio1 / 5140.19%
Vi1 / 5080.20%
BSNL12 / 4992.40%

BSNL Also Trails in Call Silence Performance

TRAI also measured call-silence instances lasting more than three seconds.

Jio recorded only 2 silence instances across 492 established calls, while Airtel recorded 3 across 493 calls. Vi reported 3 across 501 calls.

BSNL recorded 38 silence instances across 486 calls, substantially higher than its competitors.

The combination of higher dropped calls, more poor-signal samples and significantly more call-silence instances suggests that BSNL had the weakest overall voice-network performance among the four operators during the Chennai test.

Chennai Network Test Shows Different Strengths for Jio and Airtel

The TRAI results do not produce a single winner across every network parameter.

Jio has the strongest advantage in download performance, reaching nearly 303 Mbps, more than twice Airtel’s average. Jio also recorded zero limited-service samples and only one dropped call.

Airtel leads in upload performance and voice reliability, delivering 34.21 Mbps average upload speed, the lowest incidence of poor signal and zero dropped calls.

Vi’s speeds remain below Jio and Airtel, but its coverage results were competitive: only 54 poor-signal samples, zero limited-service samples and one dropped call.

BSNL was substantially behind the private operators across most measurements. Its 11.40 Mbps download speed, 6.37 Mbps upload speed, 1,072 poor-signal samples and 12 dropped calls highlight the network-performance gap it needs to address as it expands and upgrades its mobile infrastructure.

For operators, the Chennai findings demonstrate why 5G network investment and coverage expansion must increasingly focus not only on headline speed but also consistent coverage, upload capacity and voice reliability.

TRAI notes that drive-test findings represent network conditions specifically along the routes, locations and times tested. They should therefore be viewed as a real-world snapshot of network performance rather than a ranking of operator performance across the entire Chennai telecom market.

Nevertheless, the July 2026 results reveal a clear competitive picture: Jio dominates mobile download speed, Airtel leads upload speed and dropped-call performance, Vi delivers strong coverage consistency, while BSNL faces the biggest challenge in closing Chennai’s mobile network quality gap.
