Videocon offers 3x mobile Internet data taking on major telecom operators

Telecom Lead India: Videocon’s latest mobile Internet offerings are aimed taking on operators — like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea — which are likely to increase mobile Internet rates.

Videocon Mobile Services SuperNet data plans for smartphone users start at Rs 5 and offers up to 3 times more internet data than other service providers.

The $4 billion Videocon Group says its advanced 2.75G EDGE GSM network technology supports data services under 6 variants.

However, Videocon did not share much details about the speed of the data network.

Also, there is lack of clarity about roaming charges since Videocon does not have national presence.

Smartphones in India are expected to increase at a CAGR of 57.5 percernt during 2011-2016.

According to Nielsen Informate Mobile Insights, 22 million use their smartphones for social networking, 24 million use it for online searching, 21 million for looking up app stores and 19 million each who use these devices for chatting and mailing, respectively.

Arvind Bali, director and CEO, Videocon Mobile Services, says its SuperNet data plans offer about 3 times more internet data and faster download speeds than its competitors.

Videocon Mobile Services will utilize spectrum that it won in November 2012.

Recently, Internet industry body ISPAI said that rates of internet and broadband services may go up under new licenses framework due to high entry fee proposed by Department of Telecommunications. DoT has proposed to charge one-time entry of Rs 15 crore for a national level Unified Licence compared to Rs 30 lakh which companies pay for internet services at present.
