The new initiative – announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2026) in Barcelona — is aimed at assessing how satellite-enabled D2D services can complement existing 4G and 5G mobile networks for consumers, enterprises and public sector organizations.

Satellite Connect Europe, headquartered in Luxembourg, provides open access D2D satellite connectivity designed to connect standard mobile devices directly to satellites without requiring specialized hardware. The collaboration reflects Telefonica’s broader strategy to strengthen network resilience and extend coverage in underserved and remote areas.

Integrating Satellite D2D with 4G and 5G Networks

Under the engagement, Telefonica will analyze how satellite D2D capabilities can be integrated into its terrestrial mobile infrastructure. The objective is to complement existing 4G and 5G networks by enhancing coverage in rural regions and maintaining connectivity during exceptional circumstances such as natural disasters or infrastructure disruptions.

The companies will evaluate how satellite connectivity can operate alongside operator-managed mobile services, ensuring a seamless user experience while maintaining network control and service quality standards.

By combining terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, Telefonica aims to create a hybrid connectivity model that strengthens service continuity and improves reach across Spain and Germany.

Supporting European Regulatory Alignment

Telefonica emphasized its support for the development of satellite services in Europe that operate within established regulatory and spectrum frameworks. The operator will continue engaging with regulators and industry stakeholders to contribute to discussions shaping the future evolution of direct-to-device satellite connectivity in Europe.

The collaboration aligns with the growing interest among European telecom operators in leveraging satellite technologies to complement advanced mobile networks while preserving spectrum integrity and compliance with regional policies.

Andrea Folgueiras, Global Chief Technology and Information Officer at Telefonica, said the company aims to deepen its understanding of how direct-to-device satellite technologies can enhance advanced mobile networks and address connectivity gaps in remote areas across Europe.

Meredith Sharples, Managing Director of Satellite Connect Europe, noted that the engagement represents another step forward in expanding AST SpaceMobile-powered D2D satellite connectivity across the region, highlighting increasing alignment among leading operators in Europe.

Expanding Hybrid Connectivity Across Europe The engagement signals Telefonica’s commitment to exploring next-generation connectivity models that integrate terrestrial 5G infrastructure with satellite-based services. As demand for ubiquitous coverage grows, hybrid satellite and mobile network solutions are expected to play a key role in ensuring resilient, inclusive and future-ready digital connectivity across Europe.
