COAI Welcomes States Embrace Green Open Access Rules, Empowering Renewable Energy Adoption

COAI has welcomed that five Indian states — Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand — have embraced the amended Green Open Energy Access Rules issued by the Ministry of Power earlier this year.
Telecom tower of Virgin Media O2The progressive Electricity (Promoting Renewable Energy Through Green Energy Open Access) (Second Amendment) Rules 2023, introduced by the Ministry of Power, facilitate entities to aggregate their electricity load by multiple connections within the same electricity division of a DISCOM, enabling eligibility for availing Open Access for Green Energy if the load is 100 kW or more.

This move empowers consumers to access electricity from renewable energy generators or demand Green Energy from DISCOM(s), aligning with India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering a cleaner energy future.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), acknowledging the significance of this development, highlighted the telecom industry’s collaborative efforts with stakeholders to drive the adoption of green power. The concerted perseverance, along with support from the Department of Telecommunications, TRAI, and the Ministry of Power, has initiated a rising trend in the adoption of facilitative Green Open Access rules across various states.

“The support by the Government for a long-standing industry demand, alongside the growing adoption of facilitative Green Open Access by leading states and Union Territories, reaffirm the industry’s stance on this matter,” SP Kochhar, Director General of COAI, said.

The telecom industry in India, as a responsible corporate entity, remains dedicated to fostering sustainable growth and aiding the nation in achieving its Green Energy objectives by curbing carbon emissions, COAI said.
