AT&T starts smart city biz division

AT&T
American wireless service provider AT&T has recently formed an independent business division for smart city called Smart Cities Organization.

Earlier, AT&T has also floated connected car organization.

Both the connected car and smart city initiatives have dedicated resources and IoT expertise to expand the enterprise business of AT&T. There are more than 23 million connected devices globally. AT&T wants to build additional business on IoT platforms since wireless call services are becoming a saturated business for the telecom giant.

AT&T has utilized IoT for connecting things like utility meters, street lights, and water systems. Smart City solutions from AT&T range from detecting speeding cars, to conserving energy with motion sensor lights in parking garages, video monitoring, and intelligent transportation.

AT&T is providing cloud-based technology that provides real time energy usage and management and allows a customer to prepay their electric bill.

“The surge of connected devices shows there are endless possibilities for building smart cities,” said Glenn Lurie, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility.

Meanwhile, AT&T and Telogis, a SaaS-based connected vehicle technology provider, will offer solutions for companies with mobile workforces.

Telogis is the exclusive connected commercial vehicle technology provider for Ford Motor Company. Apart from Ford, Telogis also works with General Motors, Hino, Volvo, Mack, Manitowoc Cranes and Isuzu to build its solutions into vehicles and equipment in the factory.

Telogis, working with AT&T, is implementing a network solution to deliver data. AT&T is working with Telogis to help with over the air updates and provide unique split billing capabilities.
