Airtel submits final bid for telecom license in Myanmar

Telecom Lead India: Bharti Airtel has submitted its final bid for telecom license in Myanmar.

Airtel, India’s #1 telecom operator, already offers mobile services in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and 17 African countries apart from India.

Interestingly, SingTel, an investor in Airtel, is also in the fray.

Recently, China Mobile and Vodafone decided to pull out of the bidding process due to new guidelines.

Apart from Airtel consortium, there are 10 other bidders in the race for two new licenses in Myanmar, which include Axiata, Digicel, France-Tel, KDDI, Millicom, MTN, QTel, SingTel, Telenor and Viettel.

Recently, media reported that MTN is looking to tie up with India’s Reliance Communication.

On June 27, the Myanmar government will announce the winners for the 2×5 MHz on 900 MHz and 2×10 MHz on 2100 MHz licenses.

Myanmar’s Communication Ministry plans to expand telephone penetration between 75 and 80 percent by 2016, from the current level of around 10 percent.
