Telstra demos data encryption maintaining speed over 21,940 km

Transatlantic encryption
Ericsson, Telstra and Ciena teams demonstrated the ability to encrypt data securely while in transit between Los Angeles and Melbourne at 100 Gbps, using Ciena’s 100 Gigabit wire-speed encryption solution.

The data encryption while maintaining speed over 21,940 km across multiple cable systems will assist industries such as finance, healthcare, defense, and Government sectors, which have higher security obligations.

Data center operators will be particularly interested in this new encryption technology.

This demo of data encryption technology shows that customer services with large bandwidth needs can be secured and data transported across any distance and over an underlying network that uses multiple vendors.

“We can provide service consistency regardless of the cable system used. Customers can protect their data not only at the application layer, but also at the network layer without any reduction in quality,” said Darrin Webb, executive director of International Operations and Services at Telstra.

Ericsson, in January 2015, achieved 200 Gbps between Melbourne and Sydney, 10 Gbps speeds over Melbourne to Los Angeles in January this year and 100 Gbps in September.
